Starting a new musical chapter with a journey back to the start of my obsession with the drums. This year, and starting next week with soulhoundatlanta, I’ll be getting back to regularly playing rock (and some punk) on the drums. Last time for me was 30 years ago! For the kit I will be using for heavier gigs, I worked with ludwigdrumshq and Jess Birch at goodhandsdrumshop in NYC to recreate the first drum set I really had the chance to play regularly. My Jr high school band director used to let me (then a trumpet player) bang away on the school kit at Kennedy Jr. High in Southington, Connecticut (go Eagles) after school while I was waiting for a ride to New Britain, where we were staying temporarily while our new house was being being built. I’m pretty sure I worked on playing “I Love it Loud” by KISS everyday, and must have made the band director totally crazy. Then, when we moved into the new house, he let me take the school kit home for the summer. I set them up in the garage, and wailed away on that kit every day in the summer heat until I was exhausted. To this day, it was the happiest I ever felt on the drums. I remembered every detail of that kit, and this kit is a faithful replica of it, other than some good hardware advances. Ludwig 3 ply shells, in ringostarrmusic “super classic” sizes, green sparkle, blue and olive badges, curved spurs, silver dot heads, and a brass supraphonic. Of course I added Canopus accessories (snare wires, bolt tight washers, snare belt, hybrid throne), and Royal Cymbals. A timeless classic that I will be giving a sound beating on stages and in dive bars around Atlanta soon.
